Increase in Car Accidents and Mortality Due to I-4 Ultimate Construction Project
It's no secret: The I-4 freeway, built more than 50 years ago, cannot handle modern traffic levels. Today, it is estimated that more than 200,000 vehicles travel I-4 daily —nearly triple the 70,000 that were originally planned. This excess of vehicles has made it one of the most dangerous highways in the country and is the motivation behind the ambitious "Ultimate" redevelopment project. This project, which will add more canals and accesses to the highway, is expected to be completed in 2021, however, what are the results so far?
According to statistics published by the Orlando Sentinel, traffic accidents on I-4, including car and truck accidents, have increased 12 percent since the start of the project due to increased congestion, unexpected roadblocks, and people driving over the speed limit. As a result, injuries and fatalities have also increased.
Some of the factors that can cause traffic accidents on I-4 are:
- Improper lane changes.
- Altered lanes and exits due to the construction project.
- Drivers unaware of lane closures.
- Vehicle repair negligence.
- Distractions, especially during congestion.
Many of these situations can be avoided. For example, closures of lanes and exits for more than 24 hours require citizens to be notified 28 days in advance, while short closures require at least 14 days. However, an accident can happen anywhere, anytime, especially when there are many tired and stressed out people on the same road. What should you do if you are involved in a car accident on I-4?
Contacting a Lawyer from First Choice Law is Your Best Option
After a traffic accident, you are likely to be physically injured and emotionally distressed. You may even suffer severe injuries, such as those traumatic brain injuries, caused by whiplash or even death. Add to that the stress of gathering evidence, dealing with insurance companies, and potential claims from the other driver, and it can be exhausting.
However, it is necessary to determine who is at fault in this situation: The other driver involved in the accident or the contractor in charge of the highway remodeling? Another important question that may be on your mind: Can you receive compensation if you were involved in a traffic accident on I-4?
A car accident attorney can help you answer these questions and properly handle your case to reach the best outcome.
Consider that the culpability for an accident could be determined by the smallest detail. The construction company could have created unfavorable conditions for vehicle traffic, such as lack of maintenance or warnings in hazardous areas. Other drivers could have made improper maneuvers. You will need help from an experienced team in these cases.
